Weekly Update 9-23

Families and Friend,

 

Thank you to all of the families that were able to attend our Open House! It was great to see you again. The children were very excited to share the classroom with their families. If you have any questions about the material you received, please don’t hesitate to email me.
A few notes for the week:
• Please return the following forms, if you have not: lunch form, emergency form, student information form, media release, student code of conduct and dental form (if you are interested.)
• Mark your calendars: we have a field trip scheduled for October 31st. If you are interested in volunteering on the trip, please email me. There will be a limited number of parents that can attend. More information will follow.

-School Pictures are Thursday, September 25th.  Picture forms were sent out last week.  If you have misplaced the form you will have to pick up a new one in the school office.

We need socks!! Please send any mismatched socks you have. We will use them for erasers for our white board work.
• Please send a healthy snack for 23 students. No students were scheduled for the month of September. Thank you to Victoria for donating snack for the class.

Please pay the $85 student fee ASAP.

 

READING: This week in reading we will be focusing on the sequence of events in a story and asking questions of our peers to demonstrate understanding of the text. We will focus on learning/reviewing the sounds for short o, l, x and inflectional -s.  We will also be studying verbs.  During writing workshop we will continue writing our small moment stories.  We will focus on drawing objects that challenge us.  We are trying to move away from stick people and give clothing to all the characters in our life.  We will also discuss ways that we work independently during writing workshop and writing more than 1 page in a story.  We will be putting a lot of emphasis on stretching out those hard to write words and always trying our best.

 

MATH:   In math this week students will complete their Unit 1 assessment.  Students will be asked to count by 1’s, 2’s and 5’s.  They will show tally marks for numbers up to 40.  In addition they will identify the larger number in a pair of numbers.  They will also be asked to name what numbers come before and after a given number.  We will begin Unit 2 in Everyday Math.  We will explore the number grid from -11 to 110.  We will also discuss all the ways we use numbers in our life.

 

SCIENCE/ SOCIAL STUDIES:  In science we will continue our investigations with Solids and Liquids.  We will focus on solids this week and discover all the different solids in our life.  We will look for solids that are flexible, rigid smooth, rough, soft, transparent, flat and pointed.  We will continue our discussion on families.

MATH

MONDAY Write each sight word on two index cards.  Use one set to introduce each sight word. Homelink

TUESDAY Play the memory matching game with the sight word cards.  Ask your child how to play see, say, spell! Homelink

Read a minimum of 15 minutes each day.
WEDNESDAY Place the cards around the room so they can be read.  Have your first grader grab the correct card as you call it out. Review Unit 1.

 

Read a minimum of 15 minutes each day.
THURSDAY Write a sentence for each of you sight words.  Do this on your own and be a brave speller. Unit 1 Open Response Read a minimum of 15 minutes each day.
FRIDAY Keep a look out for sight words in the books you read together. Reading Theme 3 packet
